I have this “weed type grass” taking over my backyard. It spreads fast, grows in days and holds moisture like crazy. It hasn’t rained in days, been 90+ and the grass is still wet like it just rained. I e had to declog the mower several times. I end up having to take half passes or the mow chokes out sometimes. Can someone tell me what this is so I can kill it. I usually have to mow 2-3 times a week as it grows so fast.

At this point, I think your best option is to nuke and replant first week in September.
Is it crabgrass?
Why is the answer always crabgrass?
It doesn’t look there’s any real turfgrass there at all to try to save. Just glyphosate/roundup the whole thing.
It’s crabgrass. And it’s not “taking” over. It’s won. I don’t see any proper turfgrass left in that yard. It’s just crabgrass. You’ll have to nuke it and start over. Or just embrace it and keep it mowed down.
No knife yet? What has this sub become.
You’ve been at war with your turf grass. You’ve not fertilized or watered properly. You’ve not put down any pre emergent to tame this. Mission accomplished.

That’s grass. You have grass taking over your grass. Congrassulations
a quarter of my yard is doing this and I’m worried it will infect the rest.
Be dead by first frost. Or you can kill it sooner with round up then aerate and seed. Before to get your prevention down in March and May next year otherwise it will be back.
All it takes it one year for crabgrass to take your lawn and you will never miss a preemergent app again lol
Johnson grass. Nothing kills it except roundup. We have it in Missouri and I work like hell once it gets hot and starts to pop up. I pull each little bud/root when I see it. It doesn’t have deep roots but yours is way out of control at this point. It’s a weekly walk around the yard during the hot summer months
Some of these full crabgrass lawns are quite impressive I must say.
Man, I drive by neatly mowed crabgrass yards in the country all summer and all I see is something that looks pretty nice and costs nothing
Crab grass sucks
I feel like crabgrass only outcompetes lawn grasses. It won’t even try native ones.
Quinclorac is what you seek.
It’s taking over mine too but with a dog (or even without) I just don’t feel like doing anything about it lol
Just get it treated and it will kill all the weeds now, and then have pre emergent applied in the fall. Enjoy planting the sod of your choice in the bare spots in the spring.
I have the same lawn mower and your deck is way to low, it’s set at just under 2 inches. When you cut grass this low is more susceptible to weeds and crabgrass. Definitely seed your lawn and don’t cut it below 3.5-4 inches, if you’re in a warm climate it’s 2.5-3 inches. Absolutely overseed late summer early fall. Maybe even add some peat moss. After the first frost the crabgrass will die and assuming enough of the fall seeding took, next spring you’re going to need to fertilize and get crabgrass preventer. You might have to put the crabgrass preventer down once at the end of April and again in June but I assure you, you won’t have an issue this bad.
